Being Human

by Andrew Louth

Being human: how could that be an issue? Perhaps it wasn’t in the past, when what it is to be human was agreed by all and taken for granted. But if we look back to the past, we must try to ensure we look back to the real past, and not simply project back an idealized form of the present.

Andrew Louth

Professor emeritus of patristic and Byzantine studies at Durham University and honorary fellow of the St Irenaeus Orthodox Institute at Radboud University, Nijmegen. He is an archpriest of the Russian Orthodox Church. His books include monographs on Dionysios the Areopagite (1989), Maximos the Confessor (1996), and John Damascene (2002), and more recently Introducing Eastern Orthodox Theology (2013) and Modern Orthodox Thinkers: From the Philokalia to the Present (2015).
