Saint Macrina the Younger: Teacher of Divine Compassion

by Beth Dunlop

What qualities make a Christian teacher? As I read about Saint Macrina, I find myself thinking that I would like to be a teacher more like her. Macrina responds to God’s great compassion in several ways: in action, by her philanthropic work and evangelical poverty; in teaching, by influencing and leading others to a life dedicated to God; and in witness, through her spirit of bravery in the face of death and thanksgiving for all God has done.

Beth Dunlop

Beth Dunlop resides on Kodiak Island, Alaska, where she teaches at Saint Herman Orthodox Theological Seminary with her husband, Father John Dunlop. There she has taught patristics, New Testament, and various other subjects since 1996. She holds a PhD in theology from Boston College, an MA from St Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary, and a BA in mathematics from Yale University.
