  1. A response worthy of a Thomist, which Fr Denis is: I have known and loved him for as long as I know him— 23+ years.
A more succinct way to talk about dogmatic development could be in Fr Serge Bulgakov’s style: in the Church, dogma develops through theologumena, which in and of themselves are not dogmatic pronouncements. Consequently, neither are they heretic, ie, counter-dogmatic. Their realm is the neutral waters of thought in becoming, not frozen. Themselves not being dogma, they nonetheless ensure the possibility for the birth, germination, and development of dogmatic thought within the Church tradition. There is no thought without room for hypothesizing and redefining problems anew in new contexts, freely and with impunity. Without that room, not only the heretics like Arius would not occur but thinkers like Leo the Great of Nicholas. If there is no room for free thought, there will never be room for any theological development, including dogmatic theology. Theologumena both mark and comprise this realm of free thought.
